The game could be stopped for commercials & we got to have those, or it could be a time-out called by one of the teams. One of the great things about the CFL is that the clock does stop after every play during the final two minutes leaving a ton of time to add to the score. Nothing burns my butt more than when I see NFL players running off of the field and there is still time ticking down on the clock. Mind you, it's another story if I have money on the game and the right team is winning.

well at least in the nfl and ncaa, if a player run the ball and is down in bounds, the clock keeps ticking. if he goes out, then it stops. if the qb throws it and is caught and is in bounds, then the clock is ticking. if the ball is caught and the person goes out of bounds or the player misses the ball, then the clock stops. if its in punt return or kickoff and the player gets tackled then the time stops to get the offense and defense on the field to call the plays. also on the pat, then the clock doesn't start and on interceptions, if the person is down, then it stops too. plus penalties stop the game and they get time outs for strategic reasons. people also get injured with broken bones and are laying on the field, the clock stops to to get them off so the game can continue.

i hope i somewhat enlightened you.

Terrible clock management and I think they screw up on the clock alot.If a player goes out of bounds the timer is supposed to stop, but half the time the clocksmen still keep it running it's stupid I know.I wouldn't watch it if I didn't like my hometown team.

The clock stops when the ball goes out of bounds, there is an incomplete pass, there is an injured player on the field, there is a penalty flag thrown or they need to measure to see if there is a first down, time out is called and when points are scored.

It is difficult to figure out exactly the explanation of the random stopping clock. My best bet is that is the 20 second clock. With the clock running if a team takes more than 20 seconds to start play they get a delay of game. The clock will be ticking down, and would stop when the play starts. Or even it might have started at the end of the last play then notice a injured player or something and stopped. Not sure.
